A group exhibition THE GARDENS presents the works by three international new media artists: Ozan Turkkan, Ronen Tanchum, and Cao Yuxi.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The project explores the interaction between the physical garden and the digital garden, both representing man-made artificial nature.
For centuries, gardens have been seen as metaphors for society, miniature worlds in which the complex relationships between nature and culture unfold on a smaller scale. Gardens have always been a source of inspiration. Back in the Middle Ages, the image of a garden was interpreted as a reflection of paradise.
Gardens are places of productivity, renewal, relaxation and pleasure, where aspirations and visions for the future are embodied. They are artefacts, perpetually evolving and being in a state of constant flux. Throughout history, gardens have become a reflection of what it means to be an individual in a certain era. Their cultural history extends from the iconographic “enclosed garden” (hortus conclusus) to the gardens of St. Petersburg palaces and digital gardens nurtured by contemporary artists. Gardens today are no longer just romantic refuges, but places of experimentation.
The garden symbolises an ideal world where humans and nature coexist in perfect harmony. It is not merely a physical space but also a conceptual realm where our hopes and dreams are projected. In their diversity, gardens embody human ideals and reflect an ever-evolving relationship with nature. Video installation FLORA is a research project based on digital archives and dedicated to the study of transitional forms, biodiversity and the fractal geometric structure of biological forms in nature.
For over 15 years, media artist Ozan Turkkan has been exploring the fractal geometry of nature and the generative systems that nature uses to reproduce itself. Archival analysis plays a key role in his research and creative practice. The artist pays special attention to the theme of collective memory and its rethinking through digital archives.
In order to create FLORA, Turkkan analysed thousands of images from botanical archives. Using Creative Coding tools and artificial intelligence, he created a new type of digital archive that embodies his conceptual vision.

The PERACH project by the artist Ronen Tanchum delves into how technology can enhance our sense of connection with other life forms and deepen our understanding of ourselves and our environment.
Plants, like all living organisms, constantly interact with their surroundings, albeit through different methods of communication compared to humans. Our understanding of plants has largely been limited to external observations, such as colour changes or leaf shedding. However, they are capable of much deeper levels of communication.
This installation offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience and observe the internal processes occurring within plants. PERACH features a multi-sensor IoT device equipped with a bioimpedance sensor, soil sensor, light sensor, EMG sensor, and other sensors, alongside a video projection. These tools allow visitors to feel, hear, and visually perceive the changes happening inside the plants. The projection displays an image of the plant along with data on its vital activities, which change in response to the presence of exhibition visitors.

ROCOCO is a series of digital paintings by Ronen Tanchum showcased on multiple screens. Each image is entirely generated using code that interprets and processes the dichotomies of the natural world. This dynamic work continually evolves, producing new digital flower images every 45 seconds across various screens. The drawing algorithm was developed by merging 500 artworks from the Tezos blockchain with intricate code crafted using p5.js, coding language GLSL, and custom software.
Rococo artists cherished the organic fluidity of flowers and plant forms, striving to reimagine their perfection through compositions as stunning as nature itself.
Capturing the essence of expressive painting, ROCOCO draws inspiration from the tradition of floral depiction in art. The primary aim was to create code capable of generating flowers in a recognizable style. The result is a visually diverse and captivating collection.

SEASONAL PROXIMITIES is an immersive media art installation created by Cao Yuxi in 2021. The emergence of this project was inspired by the artist’s passion for impressionism in the digital sphere. Yuxi states that humans are constantly evolving creatures, currently entering uncharted territory where digital pixels control our vision. Human perception is oversaturated with widespread digitalization.

The artwork SUMMER GARDEN was created by the artist Ronen Tanchum specifically for the exhibition THE GARDENS on the basis of the archives of The State Russian Museum and using lidar videography of the Summer Garden. Inspired by the iconic images of the Summer Garden in St. Petersburg, Tanchum transformed elements of urban memory into an interactive media art installation.
The installation uses an algorithm based on a smile detection sensor, thereby inviting visitors to become an integral part of the interactive cycle of sunny and cloudy weather in the Summer Garden. When the visitor begins to smile, the camera captures the smile and the sun begins to rise. Visual storytelling reflects not only natural phenomena, but also the emotional landscape.
